The term white knight is common in the dating world and it refers to a man who readily sprints to a woman's defense or rescue with the sole purpose of getting her attention, even when it means disrespecting himself or the woman not needing the saving.
This behavior is not only guaranteed to fail in getting the woman's attention, but it's also weak and pathetic because it communicates the man is low value, and women are never attracted to low-value men.
They may take what the low-value men give, but they will never truly desire them or respond positively towards them. In the white knight's mind, he thinks he is a hero for dropping everything to attend to a woman's whims.
The problem is, this behavior is rarely genuine, it's not coming from a good place, therefore it's manipulative. Such a man is very likely to become frustrated, then hostile should his actions not be appreciated.
The result is men angry with women for being taken advantage of despite their futile efforts of being "gentlemen" but nothing is gentlemanly about trying to enter a woman's world by flying under the radar, tricking her into liking them.
A gentleman in contrast does not need to do all that, he is intentional with his actions and acts of goodness. When he does things for a woman it's because he wants to, not as a way to keep score.
He also understands he cannot save everyone, neither is it a winning strategy therefore he preserves his energy and most valuable asset, his attention. When he does act kind it comes off genuine rather than a weak attempt to collect brownie points.
